the places changed, the memories remianed
For this collection, I wanted to celebrate something that became such an important part of our formative years: music. But this collection is about much more than music. It explores the subcultures that defined different decades—the fashion, the attitudes, the friendships, the sense of belonging and, above all, the feeling of identity.
From Teddy Boys and Mods to Punks, New Romantics, Pop and Goths, each generation had its own visual language and expression. These were moments when young people could step outside the expectations of everyday life and become part of something bigger. It is a part of our culture that can feel increasingly lost. Today, identities and trends move at such speed that those distinctive subcultures, which once defined entire generations, seem harder to find.
I also wanted to explore another layer of nostalgia: places that no longer exist.
Many of the locations featured in these paintings have been demolished, altered or changed beyond recognition. By placing each subculture within these lost or transformed Yorkshire landmarks, I could bring together two different kinds of memory—the people and the places.
The result is a double layer of history, creating an authenticity that allows each painting to tell a story about both what was there and what has since disappeared.
Each of the six paintings has been carefully considered, pairing a particular subculture with a Yorkshire setting that adds another dimension to its story.

Time doesn't stand still: That is perhaps what sits at the heart of ‘The Bygone Yorkshire Collection.’
Time doesn't stand still. Places change. Buildings disappear. Music evolves. Fashion moves on. Subcultures merge into something new, but the memories remain. They remain in the places we remember, the music we listened to, the clothes we wore, the friends we made and the moments when we felt that we belonged to something.
This collection is my way of bringing some of those moments back to life.
‘The Bygone Yorkshire Collection’ is an invitation to look again, remember where you were, remember who you were with—and perhaps, for a moment, return to a time that once was.
